Dungeness: Derek Jarman's plant list

For one year Derek Jarman recorded for himself a list of all the plants he saw growing wild in a mile’s radius of Prospect Cottage, thriving in the desert conditions Dungeness provides.

He sent the list to the gardener Beth Chatto. Of course, she was the perfect person to receive this. She was conducting her own experiment in drought tolerance in her Suffolk garden. The planet was already beginning to boil. This was over half a century ago.

Paying attention: already a vital act of respect, companionability, possible continuum.
